WAD 26 Feature Presentation
Title
“Anesthesiology Along the Patient Pathway: From First Contact to Recovery”
Duration: 15 minutes
Format: Multimedia presentation / narrated patient journey
Presenter: To be assigned by ASOGAM
Suggested presentation style: Short narration + photographs/video clips + key messages
1. Purpose of the Presentation
The presentation should demonstrate that anaesthesia is not limited to the operating theatre or the moment when a patient is put to sleep.
Anaesthesia professionals contribute to:
Emergency care
Pre-operative assessment
Resuscitation
Pain management
Safe surgery
Maternal and newborn care
Critical care
Post-operative recovery
Patient safety
Training and capacity building
Emergency preparedness
Referral and continuity of care
The central message should be:
“Anaesthesia is present throughout the patient pathway—not just during the operation.”
2. The Patient Story
I recommend using one fictional Gambian patient to take the audience through the pathway.
For example:
“Meet Fatou”
Fatou is a 29-year-old woman who presents to a health facility with severe abdominal pain.
The audience follows Fatou from her first contact with the health system through referral, surgery, recovery and discharge.
This makes the presentation much more relatable than simply listing what anaesthetists do.
3. The Patient Pathway
STAGE 1 – FIRST CONTACT
Community → Health Centre
Visual:
A Gambian community/health centre.
Narration:
“Fatou's journey does not begin in the operating theatre. It begins when she first seeks help.”
At this stage, anaesthesia professionals may not physically be present, but the pathway depends on:
Early recognition of deterioration
Basic resuscitation
Appropriate referral
Communication between facilities
Emergency preparedness
Key message on screen:
Safe anaesthesia begins before the patient reaches the operating theatre.
4. STAGE 2 – REFERRAL & EMERGENCY RESPONSE
Fatou's condition requires referral to a higher
