BOOK 1 — THE CRAZY IDEA
Milo Carter and Jayden Ross were sitting behind an old warehouse on the edge of town.
It was Friday afternoon, and they were supposed to be doing homework.
They weren’t.
Jayden threw his backpack onto the ground.
“I’m going to be rich.”
Milo laughed.
“You’ve said that every Friday for the last three years.”
“This time I mean it.”
“How?”
Jayden stared at the enormous buildings in the distance.
“I don’t know yet.”
Milo picked up a small stone and threw it at an empty can.
“Everyone wants to be rich.”
“Yeah, but everyone else thinks it takes thirty years.”
Milo looked at him.
“So what’s your plan?”
Jayden grinned.
“Become a gangster.”
Milo burst out laughing.
“You? A gangster?”
“Why not?”
“Because you’re scared of spiders.”
“Spiders are different.”
They laughed.
But then Milo stopped.
He looked toward the city.
“What if we actually did something crazy?”
Jayden’s smile disappeared.
“What kind of crazy?”
Milo didn’t answer immediately.
He knew the idea was ridiculous.
Dangerous.
And completely insane.
But eventually he said:
“What if we stole some money and used it to make more money?”
Jayden stared at him.
For several seconds neither of them spoke.
Then Jayden smiled.
“You’ve officially lost your mind.”
