POV: A Nurse’s Break… Interrupted
Characters:
* Nurse (looking completely exhausted—messy bun, eyebags, coffee in hand)
* Resident
* Optional coworker
⸻
Scene 1 – The Long-Awaited Break
(Nurse slowly walks into the break room looking completely drained.)
Nurse (to herself):
“I’ve made it… Twelve thousand steps, five call bells, three medication rounds, two admissions…”
(Drops into a chair like gravity suddenly doubled.)
Nurse:
“My break. Nobody needs anything for just ten minutes…”
(Slowly unwraps her sandwich and takes one peaceful breath.)
⸻
Scene 2 – The Alarm
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! EMERGENCY ALARM!
(Nurse freezes. Eyes close. Doesn’t move.)
Nurse (whispers):
“…Maybe it’s a test.”
(Alarm continues.)
Nurse:
“Maybe someone else is closer.”
(Alarm continues louder.)
Coworker (walking past):
“It’s your resident.”
(Nurse slowly looks into the camera with the expression of someone who already knows how this story ends.)
⸻
Scene 3 – The Sprint
(Cue dramatic action music.)
(The exhausted nurse suddenly sprints down the hallway holding her untouched sandwich.)
⸻
Scene 4 – The Resident
(Resident is sitting safely on the floor.)
Nurse (slightly out of breath):
“Are you okay? What happened?”
Resident (cheerfully):
“I wanted to pick up my tissue…”
(Nurse stares silently into the distance for a few seconds.)
Resident:
“But since you’re here…”
Nurse:
“…Yes?”
Resident:
“Can I have a cup of tea?”
⸻
Scene 5 – The Ending
(Resident is safe, paperwork is piled high on the desk.)
Nurse (looking at the untouched sandwich):
“It’s cold.”
(Phone rings.)
*Call bell sounds again.
Nurse:
“…Of course.”
(Looks at the camera.)
