That’s a strong premise for a mystery/thriller. Here’s a short film concept that leaves the audience questioning what really happened.
The Last Boat
Three white friends and one Black friend decide to spend the weekend on a remote island. They laugh, fish, drink, and record videos together. Everything seems normal.
As the sun begins to set, the group realizes they only have room for three people on the first boat back. The Black friend, Marcus, volunteers to wait for the second boat.
“Don’t worry,” one of them says. “We’ll send someone back in 20 minutes.”
The first boat leaves.
Marcus is never seen alive again.
The next morning, his body is discovered washed onto the shore.
The three friends tell police the same story: “We don’t know what happened. We left him waiting for the second boat.”
There are no witnesses.
No second boat ever arrived.
Detectives begin investigating. One officer notices something strange: each friend’s story is almost identical, as if it had been rehearsed. Phone records show deleted messages. One of Marcus’s shoes is found near a cliff, but there are no footprints leading to the edge.
Marcus’s family refuses to believe he simply had an accident.
As the investigation continues, the audience sees flashbacks from different perspectives. In one version, Marcus slips and falls. In another, an argument breaks out after he overhears a secret. In another, someone pushes him.
Every flashback contradicts the last.
The detective finally discovers security footage from the marina showing that the second boat never left the dock that night.
The final scene cuts to the three friends sitting silently in separate interrogation rooms.
The detective places the marina footage on the table.
“You told me someone was coming back for him.”
Silence.
The screen cuts to black.
